Dubai & Mauritius 2014: Grosvenor House Dubai

This was our second trip to the UAE after visiting Abu Dhabi last year (St. Regis and Park Hyatt reviews), and we were much more looking forward to our Dubai trip since we found Abu Dhabi a little boring.

Despite our early arrival, the hotel gladly checked us in to our pre-upgraded room.  The room featured a separate bedroom and living room which is always nice–I really don’t like the word “junior suite” because it’s a contradiction (discussion for another day).

There was also a small kitchen/bar area and breakfast nook-type space off of the living room:

The bathroom was nice and featured a separate tub & shower as well as a dual sink counter:

Perhaps the highlight of the trip, though, was the absolutely amazing breakfast buffet–which was included for SPG Platinum members.  To include the full breakfast is fairly common for hotels outside of the United States, but the quality of the breakfast here was anything but.  The amount of food and how fresh and appetizing everything looked was perhaps the best we’ve seen anywhere.

Breakfast was located on the mezzanine level above the lobby:

I’m just going to throw up a bunch of pictures here because trying to describe each of them would spill too much digital ink to still consider myself a conservationist:

Perhaps the most ridiculous thing is that this isn’t even the only breakfast available to SPG Platinum members at Grosvenor House.  In fact, a slightly scaled down breakfast is available at their “Level 5” lounge–access to which is granted by staying in an eligible (similar to “club level”) rooms or SPG Platinum members.  The coolest thing, though, is that the lounge serves, lunch, afternoon tea and pre-dinner drinks as well–all of it free, and all of it open to any guest with lounge access.  For this reason, I’d say that Grosvenor House probably offers the best SPG Platinum benefits of any hotel worldwide.  It’s basically an all inclusive plan for platinum members except for dinner.

Throughout our stay at the hotel, every single staff interaction was pleasant, smiles were abundant and we really got the impression everyone cared.  Between that and the excellent SPG Platinum recognition, we won’t stay anywhere else in Dubai.  OK we might try the St. Regis when it opens, but Grosvenor House set a high bar…
