Croatia Trip 2013 – Preview and Cost
Originally, we decided to go to Amsterdam for a short vacation this month. It was a good use of miles and neither of us had been [for long, anyway]. But this summer has been pretty busy for both of us and we decided we now just want to relax instead of touring around a city for several days and get home more tired than we left…
So we looked into a few options in Europe for a beach vacation — places that had SPG or Hyatt hotels at non-exorbitant prices, so we narrowed our choices to Croatia, Crete, and Nice and/or Cannes in France. The cheapest hotel was Le Meridien in Split, Croatia at 10,000 points per night (40k for 5 nights with 5th night free), and it was also a country that neither of us had spent any time.
I was conflicted on a Provencal destination like Nice or Cannes because while I have near-native fluency in French (and that always makes things easier in a country not known for hospitality toward Americans), I’ve also spent a lot of time in Southern France over the years and wouldn’t really be seeing anything “new.”
In the end, as this is more of a quick getaway than a big vacation (like our Bali trip in May or the Maldives coming up in January), we went with the cheapest option in Croatia. Sorry for the spoiler above…
Cara has also been obsessed with the ETRO lotion (made specifically for Lufthansa and not sold in stores) she got at the Frankfurt First Class Lounge in May, so she wanted to fly Lufthansa to replenish her supply. So we waited for a Lufthansa itinerary to open up and booked our outbound so far:
We have absolutely no return trip booked yet. I’m not worried about being there without return plans, though, since award seats always open up at the last minute. We’re hoping for Lufthansa on the way back as well, so I don’t want to book anything yet and have to pay a change fee if Lufthansa opens up. I might even be able to convince Cara to stop over somewhere for a day or two…
So while I can’t give full cost info… so far our costs have been:
IAD-MUC-SPU on Lufthansa – 67,500 United miles + $98 (of which $75 was a quick ticketing fee) per person
Hopefully our return trip will be about the same.
6 Nights at Le Meridien Split – 50,000 SPG Points + $0. We may need to spend 10,000 more points on another night if Lufthansa doesn’t cooperate with their first class availability…
All in all, not a bad ~1 week vacation for about $400 out of pocket.
